BRAZIL: Lula leads polls, but scandal still "threatening

The latest opinion polls put President Lula da Silva ahead of his rival, the social-democrat Geraldo Alckmin, in the run-off race by as much as 24 percentage points. The only threat to Lula's prospects of winning a second term seems to be if the scandal involving members of his Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) becomes more serious [WR-06-37]. The opposition has already signalled it will not allow the PT's shenanigans to "die out" even after the vote on 29 October.
